E-commerce profitability depends on the following factors:

A system to run your store
A profitable sales funnel
Traffic

How do most people start a store? They do what I did when I started my dropshipping store - I spent two weeks adding products, looking up reviews on Amazon, creating new product descriptions and even translating them into a foreign language. And expecting these to sell.

This is a nice theory, however there is a huge problem with it. It doesn't work, even if you manage to drive consistent traffic to your store.

I optimized these products for long-tail keywords, created product category descriptions, wrote a bunch of blog posts. After months of work I was getting 100 page views per day.

The result: I was getting one sale every two months. Horrible ROI for all the work I put in.

How To Make Your Store Profitable

no need to talk suppliers into dropshipping,
no need to compete with 100+ other retailers selling the same brand, and
the margins are much, much better!

The real key to this approach is that there's really no inventory (or general overhead) investment up front. You PROVE through ad tests that a product is a winner BEFORE investing in self-branded inventory. It really is a BEAUTIFUL system!!

Once you have the winning product, you can also create a funnel to increase your profits.
